Correspondence and Financial Reports, Board of Foreign Missions 1931-1960.

This series comprises American Lutheran Church (ALC) Board of Trustees records pertaining to Board of Foreign Missions (BFM) activities from 1931-1960. Records include typewritten and handwritten business correspondence from 1931-1959 and printed yearly, and in some cases monthly, balance sheets for the BFM from 1944-1960. Correspondence is primarily from the BFM to the Board of Trustees alerting it to upcoming meetings, actions taken at concluded meetings, and issues to be raised at future meetings. Other correspondence is to the director of the Department of Stewardship and Finance. He was an advisory member of the Board of Trustees. Subject matter of this correspondence includes BFM budget matters, life insurance policy claims, funds disbursements, financial arrangements for deployed missionaries, and fund raising and donations from congregations. Principal authors of correspondence are Dr. Theodore P. Fricke, Executive Secretary, BFM, and Dr. George S. Schultz, and Dr. Henry F. Schuh, directors of the Department of Stewardship and Finance. Financial reports comprise annual balance sheets for 1944-1956, 1960. This series does not have annual balance sheets for 1957-1959, but there are some monthly balance sheets for these years. Unfortunately it is not a complete set. There is one folder titled "Toledo Agreement." These records are in reference to an agreement between the BFM and St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Toledo, Ohio, pertaining to the congregation's contributions to ALC India mission work.

The ALC met as a delegate body biennially in October, the time and place of which was determined by the president and Board of Trustees. All boards and standing committees sent their reports to the president at least sixty days before the convention, so that he could have them printed and sent to the delegates twenty days before the biennial meeting.
